Although the “official” date of its foundation as Middlesex Polytechnic is 1973-74, Middlesex University has a much longer tradition as an institution of learning. Its roots go back to 1878, when St Katherine’s College was founded. This college, together with other institutions, later became the forerunner of Middlesex University.

Over the years, new institutes have been established, giving Middlesex University a comprehensive teaching and research offering. Middlesex’s research covers a wide spectrum of subjects including technical courses, art and design to healthcare professions. The university demonstrates particular excellence with its Business School.

Since 2011, KMU Akademie & Management AG has been organising study programmes of Middlesex University, within the Business School. Four types of (german speaking) study programmes are now offered trough the collaboration (Bachelor, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Doctor of Business Administration).

Awards for Innovation

In 1992, the institution officially transitioned to university status. In 1996, it received the first of three Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education. These were in recognition of the university’s innovative methods of giving people with work experience credit towards a university degree. Another prize was awarded to the university for education and technology, and the third for research in flood alleviation.

Internationality as a Focus

The university has long had a particular focus on internationality. For example, Middlesex University was the first British educational institution to actively open offices to recruit students in other countries. In 2005, the campus in Dubai was established, followed by one in Mauritius in 2010. Today, Middlesex University has three campuses around the world, teaching over 40,000 students.
